Prather Returns to the Runoffs Podium
ELKHART
LAKE, Wis. (Sept. 24, 2010) – Six-time SCCA National Champion Kent
Prather made his triumphant return to the podium at the 47th
Annual SCCA National Championship Runoffs Presented by Subway at Road
America.
Following a successful test day on Saturday, Sept. 18th,
the GT-Lite field had its first qualifying session on Monday. Kent set the
early pace with a record-breaking 2:33.847 in his No. 26 Prather
Racing/Moss Motors/Mazdaspeed/Goodyear Mazda Miata. While the time was
later eclipsed by the Honda CRX of Peter Shadowen, Kent remained second on
the provisional grid.
Kent stood on that time to eventually start the race
in fourth place—the first non-Honda CRX—on the grid for Friday’s race.
Race day brought different weather than anyone had
seen all week. A front moved through, bringing high winds (gusting to 40
mph) and cool temperatures, meaning much of the week’s setup data did not
apply for the most important part of the week.
Prather Racing was up to the challenge though, and
when the dust settled on the 13-lap, 52-mile Championship race event, Kent
had moved up to claim the bronze medal, behind a pair of Honda CRXs.
“The race went really well,” Kent said. “I was right
up on those guys and then it looked like they started to get away from me
a bit. The guy behind me started passing me in Canada Corner and slowed us
up, so then I decided I needed to do something to get away from him. Once
I got away from him, I was able to try and catch up. Then, all of a
sudden, the water temperature went way up. Apparently I had some leaves in
the grill. From that point on, it was just don’t make any mistakes and get
on the podium.”
The third place marked the 13th time Kent
has finished on the podium, which now ranks him eighth in the event’s
history.
Prather Racing had several customers performing well
at the Runoffs in other classes, including: Rick Harris (2nd in
F Production), Bob Bramlage (4th in F Production) and Eric
Prill (accident while running 2nd in F Production).
Congratulations to all of them for great weeks!
